At the time the Lord confounded the language of the people who were constructing a tower to ascend to Heaven, there was group of people who turned to the Lord for help, praying that they would still be able to understand each other. This group of people was led by two brothers, one who's name was Jared.
The Lord separated them from the people of Babel and led them to a promised land. To travel there, the Lord commanded them to build boats. They were also instructed to make them completely tight or water-proof so that no water or air could get inside them.
So that they they might have light while they traveled, the brother of Jared, fashioned 16 small stones out of molten rock and prayed to the Lord that he would touch the rocks with His finger. This picture depict the reaction of the brother of Jared upon seeing the finger of the Lord. His astonishment was that he never actually expected to see the finger of the Lord.
The prophet's account is found in the Book of Mormon. It is the brother that is the prophet with whom the Lord speaks, not Jared. Yet within the Book of Mormon itself (see the book of Ether) there is never any mention of what the brother's name is, so he is commonly referred to as the brother of Jared.
